Care Instructions
Dyed Prefolds and ClothingCrinkle Bottoms solid-dyed and tie-dyed prefolds and clothing are dyed with high quality color-fast fiber reactive dyes. Our dyed prefolds and clothing are dyed with the utmost care and should not run when washed. However, some colors are harder than others to exhaust, so we always reccommend washing seperately for the first few washes. After that, you can wash normally.
Caring for Your Cloth Diapers We use an easy system for cleaning and caring for your cloth diapers! 1. On largest water setting, wash all diapers (excluding wool covers!) on COLD/COLD with 1/2 cup of baking soda. We also like to add a small amount of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, which helps kill anything that could be in your diapers. It also takes the ammonia smell out of diapers.
2. On largest water setting, wash diapers on HOT/COLD with a very small amount of laundry detergent. Do not use any detergent that contains soap because this will leave a residue on your diapers making them less absorbant. Also add a Downy ball half full with distilled white vinegar. Vinegar helps restore the Ph level of your diapers. DO NOT USE FABRIC SOFTENER. If you notice that your diapers are smelling, even after washing or they are less absorbant, omit vinegar. At this point, you can also add a scoop of oxygen bleach to help whiten and brighten your diapers. However, bleach can wear diapers out faster so we only reccommend using it when needed. (Hint: Diapers can also be hung outside in the sunshine to whiten!)
3. Run through a final rinse to rid diapers of any remaining detergent. Check diapers by smelling them to make sure they are clean. Clean diapers should smell fresh and clean. If not, run through a full wash cycle with nothing but water.
4. Load in dryer and dry for 60-70 minutes. Diapers should smell fresh and clean when done!
Caring for Wool Covers
Wool covers should NOT be washed in the washing machine, as wool will felt and shrink. The wonderful thing about wool covers is that they don't have to be washed often! Wool is naturally anti-bacterial, one of the reasons that wool is such a good choice for covers. However, this also means that it is resistant to the bacteria that cause odor and diaper rash. Wool only needs to be washed every 2-3 weeks, if it does not become soiled. You will know it's time to clean your cover because it will retain a urine smell, even after being aired out.
We reccommend at least two wool covers for daytime use. This ensures that you will have one to put on your baby and one to air. After a cover has been used, just leave open to the air and it will dry and be ready to use in no time!
To wash and lanolize:
1. Fill a bowl (I use a medium sized plastic storage bowl.) with about 1.5 cups of warm water. Add a small amount of wool wash, such as Euculan Wool Wash.
2. Gently cleanse cover, gently rubbing any spots to remove stains.
3. Do not rinse cover. Wool wash contains lanolin, which will help restore the natural waterproofing. Gently ring out cover and air dry flat.
Probably every other wash you will need to re-lanolize your diaper cover. After you have washed your cover, squirt a pea-sized amount of lanolin (just like what you would use when breastfeeding) in bowl, with a little bit of Euculan to help emulsify the lanolin. Add a small amount of HOT water to melt lanolin and then add luke warm water. Place cover in water and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Gently ring out and let cover air dry flat.
